Canada is facing a major backlog in proof-of-citizenship applications. As of 3rd September 2026, the processing time for a new proof of Canadian citizenship application has reached 33 months. This is an eight-month increase from that of August. More than 136,000 applications are reportedly in the queue.
Some applicants in certain circumstances may qualify for urgent processing. IRCC considers situations involving employment, education, serious family circumstances, citizenship deadlines, moving a minor child to Canada, access to pensions or healthcare, statelessness and certain cases involving hardship. Eligible dual citizens from visa-exempt countries who have confirmed travel to Canada within six months may also qualify.
Applicants must provide a complete application, a written explanation, and supporting evidence. Urgent processing is not guaranteed, and IRCC does not publish a specific urgent-processing timeline.
