Canada has tightened the rules for Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP) applicants with changes in employment or the ownership of their employer while their permanent residence application is being processed.
Under updated federal instructions which were published on July 23, 2026, applicants now have 90 days to submit required documents after certain employment changes. If they fail to meet the deadline, their permanent residence application can be refused.
The AIP provides a pathway to permanent residence in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island.
The new rules apply when an employer changes ownership, an applicant changes roles with the same employer, or an applicant moves to another designated AIP employer. Depending on the situation, applicants may need an updated provincial endorsement certificate and Offer of Employment form.
