Processing times for proof of Canadian citizenship applications have surged to 25 months according to the latest update from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) on August 10, 2026. The wait has increased sharply from 19 months in July and 12 months in May, more than doubling in just three months. The growing delay is linked to a major increase in applications following Canada’s December 2025 changes to citizenship-by-descent rules.
The reforms expanded eligibility to people with an unbroken line of Canadian ancestry beyond the previous first-generation limit. Meanwhile, the number of pending citizenship-proof applications has surpassed 100,000, adding further pressure on IRCC’s processing capacity. Applicants should therefore expect potentially lengthy waits while the department works through the expanding backlog.
