IRCC Issues Updated Guidance on Study Permit Rules for International Students

Canada has come up with major update regarding the operational guidance of the study permit system. With the new updates, IRCC intends to improve study permit compliance and the integrity of the system. Applicants must continue to meet the existing financial and documentation requirements.

One of the important updates relates to the transfer between Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) and the switching of academic programs by students. Students are permitted to change institutions, however the immigration officials may check whether the changes between institutions or programs are consistent with the student's study permit conditions and educational objectives. There will be additional scrutiny for students who frequently change institutions or programs without a clear academic reason.

Further, another update is regarding the authorized leave from studies. International students are allowed to take an approved break of up to 150 days but only with valid reasons. The leave must be authorized by their institution. Students who are taking leave must return to their studies within the permitted period and resume their studies within the 150 days or they must take appropriate steps to maintain their legal status in Canada. Students not able to do so may have to change their immigration status or leave Canada.

Furthermore, the temporary public policy allowing certain work permit holders to study in Canada without an additional study permit will end on June 27, 2026. Individuals who want to continue their studies in Canada after this date, therefore, must secure a valid study permit after this date unless they qualify for another exemption.

To ensure compliance, current as well as prospective international students must stay informed, understand their responsibilities, and plan ahead so as to avoid disruptions to their studies and future immigration.
