Canada Launches New TR-to-PR Pathway for Temporary Workers

Canada has officially launched the Temporary Resident (TR) to Permanent Resident (PR) pathway. Through the pathway, thousands of temporary foreign workers already in the country get the opportunity to obtain permanent residency in Canada. The program, which is expected to take place over the next two years, will allow up to 33,000 temporary foreign workers to transition to permanent residence.

The program, a part of the broader immigration strategy of the country targets temporary workers working in certain sectors that are in demand, especially those living in the rural areas.
The federal government, from January 2024, has been introducing several measures to reduce the number of temporary residents to below 5% of the

population by 2027. For doing so, the number of new study and work permits issued has been limited while encouraging some temporary residents to transition to permanent residency and allowing others to leave once their permits expire.

The government is yet to announce the eligibility and details on the application process of the new program. It is recommended that the potential applicants begin preparing the important documents, such as proof of education, employment, language tests, etc., ahead of the announcement of the other details of the program.

The TR to PR pathway is expected to support economic growth and labour gaps while helping skilled workers who have already established themselves in the Canadian communities and contribute to the economy build a stable future in the country.
