Canada Immigration Updates: Key Changes to Watch in October 2026

October 2026 brings several important deadlines and developments for people planning to immigrate to Canada. Applicants, employers and temporary foreign workers should pay close attention to several provincial and federal updates.

British Columbia’s temporary Rural/Remote Health Support Initiative will close registration on October 7, affecting eligible cleaning and security workers employed directly by public health authorities in qualifying rural and remote communities.

The Yukon Nominee Program public consultation ends on October 8. The consultation could influence program changes expected in 2027.

On October 9, Canada’s employment authorities will release a new quarterly unemployment-rate table. This will determine which metropolitan areas can process new low-wage LMIA applications, with the 6% unemployment threshold continuing to apply.

Prince Edward Island is expected to hold an immigration invitation round on October 15, while Quebec’s first intake period under the temporarily reactivated PEQ program closes on October 31.

Meanwhile, immigration candidates will closely monitor Express Entry draws and Ontario’s redesigned Ontario Workforce Priority stream. Canada is also preparing its 2027–2029 Immigration Levels Plan, which will influence future permanent-residence targets.

October is a crucial month for candidates because several deadlines could directly affect immigration opportunities across Canada.
