Canadian employers hiring foreign workers using the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) now have longer processing times for Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs). According to August 2026 figures released by Employment and Social Development Canada, processing times increased across most TFWP streams.
The permanent resident stream saw the biggest increase. The processing period for the stream increased from 70 days to 156 days, while the low-wage stream increased from 73 to 82 days. High-wage applications also increased slightly to 90 days. The Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program was the only stream to see an improvement, with processing times falling to six days. The Global Talent Stream remained stable at 10 days continuing to meet its service standard. The delays could affect employers who plan to hire foreign workers. It may lead to longer waiting period before work permit applications can proceed.
