Canada Plans CRS Score Changes Under New Express Entry Reforms

Canada plans major changes to its Express Entry immigration system. The new rules will prioritize skilled workers with eligible Canadian work experience or job offers in high-wage occupations. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the reforms on 16th October, and the implementation of the changes is scheduled for 3rd November.

Under the revised Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), candidates with qualifying job offers in designated high-wage occupations may receive 50, 70, or 100 additional points, depending on the occupation's wage category. Applicants with at least 12 months of eligible Canadian work experience in qualifying high-wage occupations may receive an additional 20, 40, or 70 points, depending on the applicable wage threshold.

Eligible occupations span sectors including healthcare, engineering, technology, education, and skilled trades, although eligibility depends on the specific occupation and its wage classification.

Another major change is the removal of the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) requirement for qualifying job offers used to obtain CRS points or meet certain program eligibility requirements. Employers and the job offers given must still meet the criteria of IRCC.

IRCC will automatically recalculate existing candidates' CRS scores after the changes take effect. Further, Express Entry invitation rounds will be temporarily paused during this process, which may take up to two weeks.
