How Remote Work Can Boost Your Canada PR Chances as an International Student (2026 Guide)

Working part-time remotely for a foreign employer while studying full-time in Canada can help strengthen your Express Entry profile. It will help to increase your CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score and make you qualify for category-based selection. While working part-time remotely, the student must remain compliant with the study permit conditions.

The work done in Canada for a Canadian or foreign employer under the 24-hour off-campus limit does not count toward Express Entry Canada PR eligibility or CRS points. The off-campus work hour restriction of 24 hours does not apply to remote work done in Canada for an employer outside of Canada.

Earning CRS Points through Part-Time Foreign Remote Work Experience

Canadian and foreign work experience, including remote work, will add Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points under the Express Entry system. The work should be skilled work under the TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3 category occupations and should have been gained within the time as per the IRCC rules.

Foreign work experience while studying in Canada

Having foreign experience will get you up to 100 CRS points when it is combined with strong language proficiency and Canadian work experience. To earn the 100 points, the candidate should have

  • Minimum 3 years of foreign work experience and earn CLB 9 or higher in all language abilities
  • Minimum 3 years of total work experience, including both Canadian and foreign experience.

Foreign work experience with language proficiency:

1–2 years of foreign work experience

  • 13 points (CLB 7 or higher, with at least one ability below CLB 9)
  • 25 points (CLB 9 or higher in all abilities)

3 or more years of foreign work experience

  • 25 points (CLB 7 or higher, with at least one ability below CLB 9)
  • 50 points (CLB 9 or higher in all abilities)

Foreign work experience combined with Canadian work experience:

1–2 years of foreign work experience

  • 13 points (with 1 year of Canadian work experience)
  • 25 points (with 2 years of Canadian work experience)

3 or more years of foreign work experience

  • 25 points (with 1 year of Canadian work experience)
  • 50 points (with 2 years of Canadian work experience)

Foreign work experience gained by working part-time remotely while pursuing studies in Canada will take longer to complete [one year of experience (1,560 hours)]. Thus, to claim the CRS points on the basis of that experience takes a longer time.

Best PR strategy for international students in Canada 2026

If you are qualified for the category-based selection under Express Entry, then you require only a low CRS score Canada to receive an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residence. Students who are studying full-time in Canada and who are working part-time remotely for a foreign employer will be able to build eligibility for occupational category-targeted draws.

International Students Canada PR: To qualify for the category-based draws, candidates should have at least 12 months of work experience (or the part-time equivalent) within the past three years in a single eligible occupation (NOC-based). This experience can be gained in Canada or abroad. This experience need not be continuous. The minimum cutoff scores of category-based draws are often lower.

The non-Canadian work experience-based occupational categories that are at present available are

  • Healthcare and social services
  • Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)
  • Trade
  • Education
  • Transport

Things You Should Know About IRCC Work Requirements

1 year of full-time work experience is equal to 1,560 hours (about 30 hours per week). Extra work hours done beyond the weekly limit will not be considered toward the one-year work experience requirement. Therefore, the time required for gaining one year of work experience in Canada or abroad cannot be completed faster by working additional time. For category-based Express Entry eligibility in Canada, applicants should have 12 months of continuous work experience in a single NOC within the last 3 years. The part-time is calculated proportionally, and it is 30 hours per week, which will take longer to meet the requirement.

Due to the commitments of the studies, the full-time students usually take longer to meet the one-year requirement through part-time remote work. Full-time students (usually 20–40 study hours/week) may find it difficult to build work experience quickly alongside studies. If they stop working before meeting the requirement or fail to receive an ITA, they may lose eligibility for the 3-year work experience within a year. Working remotely more than 15–20 hours per week while studying may not be practical for many students trying to gain eligible work experience. Therefore, students must be mindful of the time needed to meet these requirements.

Remote foreign work while studying in Canada under Express Entry is closely reviewed, so applicants who declare such experience and receive an ITA must provide proper documentation to prove that all work history meets all eligibility criteria.
